While they had just five wins last season, Elyria Christian Head Volleyball Coach Jayme Gardner is excited about the potential for the Eagles in the 2019 season.

“We have the potential to have a great year,” noted Coach Gardner, heading into her ninth season as head coach. “We only lost one senior from last year and that was Brekken Anderson, our libero. Although she give us big shoes to fill, this year we have a different dynamic of girls who are willing to fill those shoes.”

Gardner gets excited when talking about the girls on the roster this season as they have been bringing a lot of energy to practices and have shown a strong desire to win.

When you look at the top returning players, one finds the Eagles as still a young team with senior setter Katelyn Huddle, junior outside hitter Merrick Robertson and sophomores Kylee Penner, Kilynn Starburg and Lauren Arden as the top five returnees. The top newcomer to the mix will be freshman outside hitter Ryland Hawkinson.

Gardner finished her pre-season comments by adding, “We are still a pretty young team, but most of our young girls already have a year of varsity under their belt. Having a senior setter like Katelyn Huddle to lead the pack is something that we are going to be blessed with this season.”

The question is, can the team live up to the coach’s reference that they have seen nothing but the team being willing to put in the work to do what it takes to be the best team they can be.

Elyria was scheduled to open their 2019 season on Wednesday, August 28 with a match against Central Christian.
