Coming close to near perfection on Thursday in Hesston, the McPherson High Girls Tennis team scored a team championship at the Hesston Invitational while taking first in three of the four events.
Team wise, the Lady Bullpups finished with 30 points to outdistance Buhler by nine at 21, while host Hesston finished with 18 and Trinity Academy had 15 to round out the top four.
In number one doubles, the experience tandem of Taylor Bruce and CeAnna Allen went 3-0 to finish first, while the duo of Rachel Carlson and Patty Huerta also went 3-0 to finish first at number two doubles.
Carley Malm also went 3-0 in number two singles to win the Lady Bullpups their third invitational championship while Perrin Schneider went 2-1 to finish second in number one singles.
“I felt everyone of our girls played well today,” noted McPherson Head Coach Tyler Brown. “Our seniors Taylor Bruce (in number one doubles) and Rachel Carlson (in number two doubles) did an excellent job of setting the tone with both getting first place in their divisions along with their teammates CeAnna Allen (in number one doubles) and Patty Huerta (in number two doubles).”
“Perrin (Schneider) picked up right where she left off last year by getting another signature win over Aliyah Frederick of Buhler who finished fifth in Class 4A at state last year,” added Coach Brown. “Perrin was down 2-5 when she found her game and went on a 6-0 run to win the match 8-5!! I’m starting to think Perrin enjoys the big stage!”
Coach Brown continued handing out the praises, saying, “Rounding out for the team was Carley (Malm) who was all business playing the number two singles and going 3-0 for another first place for the team. We talked in the van before taking the court about just playing to our potential and having no regrets and wow, were they spot on to start out the year.”
Concluding his post-match reflections, Coach Brown finished by adding, “I’m truly excited for the season cause we even have a few girls that didn’t travel with us that are pretty equivalent to the ones that played today, so practice will be just as fun as the meets as we watch these girls go at it. All are trying to find their spot on the big stage.”
The Lady Bullpup tennis team will return to the courts on Thursday, September 5 when they host the Bullpup Invitational beginning at 3:00 p.m. Teams playing in the invitational will be Derby, Elyria Christian, Goddard Eisenhower, Great Bend, Newton, and Valley Center.
