It was always pretty, but the McPherson High boys soccer team still managed a victory in their 2019 season debut, winning 4-1 over Newton on the road Saturday.

Rhett Edmonson scored 11 goals to go with seven assists in 2018, and he didn’t appear to miss a beat as he earned credit for the Bullpups first goal of the game in the first half off an assist from Drew Schrader.

Tyler Hoxie equaled his total goals for 2018 by scoring twice, once late in the first half and again early in the second half, before the Bullpups leading returning scorer Britton Haigh put one on the board off an assist from Jael Jaime.

Overall, McPherson fired off 13 shots on goal, while Nathan Lloyd was busy in goal for the Bullpups and recorded seven saves. In 2018, Lloyd recorded 64 saves on the season.

“We only graduated two seniors from last year’s team and I was hoping the boys could pick up right where they left off,” noted Bullpup Head Coach Chris Adrian as he begins his tenth season leading the team. “They have been working really hard this summer to be ready for the fall season. Establishing some depth on the varsity side is going to be a priority, but I’ve been really pleased with what I’ve seen from some of our sophomores and freshman. This may be the most senior laden team I’ve had the chance to coach and it’s a team full of great leaders and very talented players, both of which is a recipe for success and if they stay healthy, we have the potential to make a deep post-season run in 2019.”

In the junior varsity matchup, the Bullpups took a 4-2 loss as Adolfo Ontiveros and Josh Everhart scored the McPherson goals, with Everhart getting an assist from freshman Tito Mendez.

Next up for the Bullpup kickers will be a home battle on Thursday, September 5 against Salina South. Opening kick is set for 7:00 p.m. at McPherson College Stadium.
