Unity and experience are what Head Coach Cloe Hedlund is looking to lead the 2019 Canton/Galva Volleyball team.
“We have a total of nine senior on our team this season,” noted Coach Hedlund. “So that gives us lots of leadership and experience. I have some amazing and supportive seniors on the court and on the bench. They have really worked together to create a solid unit on and off the court.”
In 2018, Canton/Galva finished 11-19 in Coach Hedlund’s first season while ending up sixth in the Wheat State League standings before losing to Ellsworth in their first round of sub-state.
The Lady Eagles lost two outside hitters to graduation, so Coach Hedlund will be looking to fill at least one of those spots in 2019 and that will likely come from Braylee Doughman who played some minutes last season at the position.
Other returning Lady Eagles that Coach Hedlund will be counting on are Tia Moddelmog and Alexa Burch in the middle, Jayci Mastre at setter/right side plus libero’s Carissa Klatt and Megan Maltbie. One newcomer to the team getting coach accolades is freshman setter Brecken Pearson.
Two other returnees, Celey Johnson and Maddison McHugh help the coaching staff by playing a vital role on the team with support from the bench and on the court.
“The passion and knowledge that Celey (Johnson) and Maddison (McHugh) have for the game really helps in encouraging those playing,” commented Coach Hedlund. “At anytime I can call on them and they are ready to help whenever needed.”
As Coach Hedlund concluded her pre-season reflections, she talked about what they were still looking for when she added, “We are still looking for an outside hitter to fill our vacancy in that position, and I look for a junior or senior to step up and occupy that role, but time will determine who is the best fit with the players on the court.”
The Lady Eagles are set to open the 2019 season on Tuesday, September 3 when they play host to Inman and Centre, with opening volley coming at 4:00 p.m.
