It was a rough start to the 2019 season for the Elyria Christian volleyball team as they dropped both matches Tuesday on the road in Wichita to WAHAA and Central Christian.
In their first match, the Lady Eagles did their best to stay close but lost in straight sets to WAHAA, 18-25, 15-25. Merrick Robertson scored three kills and had six digs to lead Elyria, while Kylee Penner also earned credit for four kills.
Elyria pushed Central Christian to three sets before losing the match despite winning the first set 25-19. Central Christian scored 17-25 and 21-25 victories in the final two sets to take the match. Freshman Ryland Hawkinson, playing in her first varsity match, had a solid performance by scoring four kills, making eight digs and hitting one ace. Kylee Penner had another consistent match by getting another four kills while adding two aces to her stats for the day.
“We overcame some nerves after the first match to play a great match against Central Christian,” commented Lady Eagle Head Coach Jayme Gardner in her post-match reflections. “Although we have a lot to work on, I was excited to see some things start coming together and their unity and flow showed up on the court.”
Next up for the Elyria Christian Lady Eagle volleyball team will be on Tuesday, September 10 when they travel to Centre to battle Centre, Goessel and Herington.
