Considered one of the top teams in the state, the McPherson High volleyball team powered their way to a couple of straight set match victories on Tuesday at home in the Roundhouse in their 2019 season opener.
The Lady Bullpups started out by making quick work of Winfield 25-15, 25-12, to get the evening started before being pushed to the edges by Circle before also winning in straight sets, 26-24, 25-20.
Five service points by Brette Doile helped set the spirit of match one as McPherson cruised to victory in a set that was never much in doubt against Winfield.
In the second match, the Lady Bullpups discovered why Circle is considered their top competition to AVCTL supremacy as the T-Birds spotted McPherson a 13-4 advantage in set one before roaring back with a 13-3 run to take a 17-16 lead and from there the game was on. When tied at 24-24, Cassie Cooks scored a kill to give the Lady Bullpups a 25-24 lead before Circle was tagged with a net violation on set point.
While Circle made life rough in set two, Cooks and Rhian Swanson helped power McPherson back into the lead which lead to the victory and straight set match win.
According to several reports, Lady Bullpup Christy Doile was noted as saying that they now know that Circle was going to be pretty good this year and it was nice to get the victory after they gave her girls a run for their money.
Cooks and Swanson led the Lady Bullpups in kills with 14 and 12 respectively, while Doile got credit for 22 assists and Taylor Casebeer led the team in digs with 12.
The Lady Bullpup spikers will be back on the court on Saturday, September 7 when they travel to Hutchinson for the AVCTL Pre-season Tournament beginning at 8:00 a.m.
