Opening day for the 2019 season was pure success for the McPherson Middle School seventh grade volleyball team as both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams scored straight set wins in Newton on Tuesday over Salina South and Newton Chisholm.
In the ‘A’ team matches, the Lady Junior Pups took down Salina South in straight sets 25-21, 25-22 before doing the same to host Newton Chisholm 25-6, 25-13.
“This was a great start to the season,” commented Head Coach Shelley Bohme. “We faced a solid Salina South team to start, and I was proud of how the girls responded even when we were down. Against Newton, we played well at the net and were able to get the ball to our hitters. We will continue to work on our communication on the court and being consistent with our serves. It will be exciting to see how this team progresses this season.”
It was pretty much the same for the seventh grade ‘B’ team spikers as they also took down Salina South in straight sets, 25-22, 25-15, before shutting down host Newton Chisholm, 25-8-25-14.
‘B’ team Head Coach Abby Bradstreet was very pleased with her team’s performance, saying, “I am so proud of this team on their first matches of the season! They worked really well together, hustled on the court, and made some great plays. Our serving looked good tonight, and we were able to set up a majority of the balls to get some hits on our side. We still need to work on being more aggressive at the net and covering each other, but overall – they did an amazing job.”
Next up for the seventh-grade Lady Junior Pups will be on Monday, September 9, when they travel to Salina to battle with Salina Lakewood and Maize South.
