The McPherson Middle School eighth-grade volleyball teams scored four big wins on Tuesday in their 2019 debut in Salina with Salina South and Newton Chisholm.

For the eighth grade ‘A’ team spikers, it took three sets before beating Newton Chisholm 25-21, 20-25, 15-13 in their first match of the season. The Lady Junior Pups came back and took down host Salina South in straight sets, 25-22, 25-14.

“I was excited for the girls to start their eighth-grade year off with two wins,” said Head Coach Jacque Colgrove. “The scores were closer than they should have been due to way too many missed serves on our side and some communication errors, but we will focus on these in practice this week and hopefully improve before the Clay Center Tournament on Saturday.”

The ‘A’ team will be back at the nets on Saturday, September 7 when they travel north to the Clay Center Tournament.

It took straight sets in both matches for the eighth grade ‘B’ team to gain two wins in their season debut.

The ‘B’ team took down Newton Chisholm 25-13, 25-14, before handing host Salina South two straight lost sets at 25-19, 25-20.

According to ‘B’ team coach Stevie Stockham, “These girls did awesome this evening trying out different rotations. I appreciate how flexible these girls were while I threw them into different situations to figure out what worked best. Kaya (Lowery) did a great job being aggressive in the front row and Addyson (Senecal) stepped up as a leader in the back row. Can’t wait to see these girls keep improving as the season continues.”
