Placing in the top three four-times helped the split McPherson High girl’s tennis team earn both a first place and fourth-place team finish on Thursday during their own Bullpup Tennis Invitational at the McPherson High Tennis Courts.
Taking first-place with 45 points was the Lady Bullpup Red team consisting of Carley Malm, Maddie Dobson, Taylor Bruce, CeAnna Allen, Rachel Carlson and Patty Huerta, while the Lady Bullpup White team took fourth by getting 33 points from Taylor Berger, Grace Witte, Perrin Schneider, Sydney Achilles, Lakynn Lippelman and Amthest Hale.
Goddard Eisenhower took second just three points behind the McPherson Red team with 42 points, while Derby finished in third with 34 points, just one point ahead of the McPherson White team. Other schools participating were Great Bend, Valley Center, Newton and Elyria Christian.
The dynamic duo of Bruce and Allen scored four straight wins to gain the championship of doubles competition, which included defeating teammates Schneider and Achilles 8-3 in the championship match. Schneider and Achilles made the championship match by knocking off fellow Lady Bullpups Carlson and Huerta, 8-4 in the semifinals, leaving Carlson and Huerta having to gain an 8-2 win over Great Bends Alexis Folkert and Abbie Moyers to finish in third-place which gave McPherson a one-two-three finish in the doubles competition for the day.
In the singles competition, Carley Malm finished third playing for the McPherson Red team. Malm lost in the semifinals to tournament runner-up Adora Weir-Dowd of Derby, 3-8, before taking down Goddard Eisenhower’s Rachel Davis, 8-3, in the third-place match.
The tandem of Lippelman and Hale took eighth in the double’s competition, while Witte, Berger and Dobson took tenth, eleventh and twelfth in singles.
“With two teams playing it’s tough to mention every girl’s performance on the day, but the doubles were strong for both teams,” noted Lady Bullpup Head Coach Tyler Brown. “All the doubles teams did was finish in the top half of the draw and we were anchored by our doubles teams with state experience going first, second and third!!”
Coach Brown concluded his post-invitational reflections referencing individual performances, saying, “Carley (Malm) also had a bit day by making it out to the semifinals before losing but then bouncing back in the third-place match to improve her record to 6-1 for the season. Our other singles players, Witte, Berger and Dobson finished right in line with each other from tenth to twelfth. Grace (Witte) had herself a day to finish the next highest behind Malm. It’s awesome to see girls continuing to push each other every day. Grace (Witte) showed that she loves to play come game day while Lakynn (Lippelman) and Amethyst (Hale) also had a big day knocking off the number five seed to start the day. It was a great day to be a Bullpup!”
The Lady Bullpup junior varsity team will return to the nets on Tuesday, September 10 when they host a Junior Varsity Invitational at the McPherson High School Courts with Andover, Goddard Eisenhower, Haysville/Campus, Hutchinson and Newton.
It will week off before the Lady Bullpup varsity gets back on the tennis courts when they travel to Salina on Saturday, September 14 to be one of 15 teams participating in the Salina Central Invitational.
