It was a tale of two games for the McPherson Middle School football teams in their 2019 season debuts on Thursday as the seventh-grade team scored a big road win over Maize South while the eighth-grade squad struggled and lost at home, also against Maize South.
7th Grader Scores 28-0 Victory!
In the seventh-grade matchup, the Junior Bullpups scored three times through the air and added one on the ground as they showed a power rushing offense with key moments of passing in their 28-0 victory.
Offensively, MMS ran for over 150 yards, with Catch Delaney running for 58 yards and one touchdown and Bishop Brown adding another 52 yards on the run. In the air the Junior Pups only passed for 49 yards, but Carter Allen threw for two scores and Alec Harms threw for another as Brock Richardson caught all three of the touchdowns and accounted for all the 49 yards in receiving.
Defensively, Logan Peterson led the way with five tackles and a quarterback sack, while Jace Fitzmorris recorded five tackles and Gabe Pyle returned an interception 54 yards to set up one of the McPherson scores.
“We were super proud of our young men and the way they came to battle today,” noted seventh-grade Head Coach Brandt Busse. “The defense took a stand early by not allowing the Maize South offense to ever really get going which was huge. Offensively we saw some really good things up front from our line which allowed our run game to really get going, we were extremely pleased with the way they played. Our defensive line was able to get a massive amount of constant pressure on the Maize South quarterback to lead that side of the game.”
Coach Busse concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “The coaching staff was extremely proud of the performance we saw today. We have some things to work on still, but we are looking forward to having a great season. This is a great bunch of kids to coach.”
8th Grade Suffers 19-0 Shutout Loss!
The eighth-grade Junior Bullpups struggled putting much together in their home debut against Maize South, losing 19-0.
“We are a very talented team physically, but we aren’t putting everything together as a team when it comes to doing your own job,” commented eighth-grade Head Coach TJ Jackson in some post-game reflections. “We saw moments of what could be very fun for this season, but nearly every time we then shot ourselves in the foot in some way. We hope to learn from this loss and go into next week and win a game that they didn’t win last season.”
Up next for the MMS squads will be a game combining both squads on Monday, September 9 when they host Garden Plain at the McPherson Grant Sports Complex. On Thursday, September 12, the seventh-grade Junior Pups will host Newton-Chisholm Middle School while the eighth-grade squad will travel to Newton to play Newton-Chisholm Middle School.
