It was an exciting debut for the Smoky Valley Senior High and Middle School cross country teams at their own Smoky Valley Cross Country Invitational on Thursday as the high school Lady Vikings took 1st and the Viking boys took 2nd while 17 runners total medaled in their respective divisions.

Running separate divisions for junior/seniors, and freshman/sophomores, the Smoky Valley girls had Gracie Lambert taking first in the freshman/sophomore division while Ellise Peterson and Kajsa Peterson took 3rd and 4th in the junior/senior division as the Lady Vikings won the overall team title. All nine of the Lady Viking runners medaled in the meet.

For the Viking boys, they took second in the team standings behind Hesston on a tie-breaker, while Ryan Heline won the junior/senior division and Garrett Huffman finished 1st in the freshman/sophomore division.  Smoky Valley had nine of eleven boys earn medals for the day.

In the Middle School divisions, both the Lady Viking 8th grade and 7th grade runners took home gold as Kenzie Heline won the 8th grade division and Sophia Fruits took gold in for the 7th grade Lady Vikings.

Between both the Senior High and Middle School competition, Smoky Valley had a total of 41 athletes participate in the Invitational.

“I am excited to get our season underway and have the first meet under our belt,” noted Smoky Valley Head Coach Holly Toll. “Even though we didn’t run the full race distance due to the heat, we have an idea of where we stand within our team as well as against some area schools. I look forward to the progress we will make each week.”
