Clay Center – Marysville proved to be the unattainable victory for both the McPherson Middle School eighth grade ‘A’ and ‘B’ team volleyball teams on Saturday when they placed second and third respectively at the Clay Center Middle School Volleyball Tournament.
For the Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ team, they blew through pool play with big wins over both Junction City (25-7, 25-19) and host Clay Center (25-15, 25-20) before going three sets to defeat Southeast Saline in the tournament semifinal match (20-25, 25-22, 15-11) to put them in the tournaments championship match.
Marysville bottled up the girls in straight sets (16-25, 23-25) to take the championship, though the Junior Lady Pups made it a nail-biting loss in the second set to get it. On the day McPherson finished 5-1.
“These girls showed how great they can be when they really play together as one team,” remarked ‘A’ Team Head Coach Jacque Colgrove during her post-tournament reflections. The girls took second place today, as it was a tough loss to a good Marysville team to end the day. I am proud of the effort the girls showed all day. There were many hustle type plays and saves during today’s matches, and if we can clean up some serving and hitting errors, we will be an even better team.”
The Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ team began their day in similar fashion by manhandling both Junction City (25-9, 25-12) and host Clay Center 25-18, 25-9) during pool play before they had their opportunity to battle with Marysville in the semifinals, where they also lost in straight sets (20-25, 22-25). The girls bounced back and handled Chapman (25-14, 25-7) to finish third for the day while going 5-1 overall.
“The ‘B’ team took third today in Clay Center,” noted ‘B’ team Coach Stevie Stockham. “Overall, I am very proud with how hard these girls played. There are a few things to work on at practice, but I feel we are doing great for how early it is in the season.”
The Junior Lady Pups will be back at the nets on Monday when they have their 2019 home debut, hosting Salina Lakewood and Maize South. It will be a busy week as they will then travel to Hays on Tuesday before making another road trip on Thursday to Abilene.
