Despite dominating time of possession and number of offensive plays, the Smoky Valley football team opened their 2019 season with a 32-16 loss on the road at Larned on Friday.

One note about the season opener, it marked the beginning of the 25th season that Dr. Loder will be walking the sidelines for the Viking football team.

While the Vikings had offensive possession for over 33 minutes during the game, Larned only needed a bit over 13 minutes to gain the victory thanks to three Viking turnovers, two by fumbles and one on a pass interception.

Larned held a 24-0 advantage after three quarters before Smoky Valley could get their first score of the game on a two-yard run by Raleigh Wilson early in the fourth quarter. Andrew Peters ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 24-8 at that point. After Larned put the game out of reach with another score with just under five minutes to play, the Vikings had one last offensive drive and scored their second touchdown of the night on an 18-yard pass from Jake Lucas to Andrew Peters with just :51 seconds left to play. Wilson scored the two-point conversion to make the final tally, Larned 32, Smoky Valley 16.

Wilson led the Viking offense by gaining 87 yards on 20 touches in the game with 71 coming on 18 runs, while Trey Kennedy also had a busy night by running for 62 yards on 19 carries.

Jake Lucas completed just five of ten pass attempts for just 47 yards as the Smoky Valley offense totaled 211 yards in offense and made 18 first downs.

Defensively, the Vikings gave up 305 yards in offense to Larned which included 185 yards rushing and 120 passing. The top defender for Smoky Valley was Kennedy who had seven tackles, with one for loss of yardage, while Tanner Luttig recorded five and one-half tackles, including two for loss of yardage.

The Vikings will look to bounce back into the win column next Friday when they make their 2019 home debut by hosting Haven. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
