SALINA – After a great start, the McPherson High 9th-grade volleyball team ran into a couple of heartbreakers and finished just 2-2 for the day on Saturday at the Salina South Invitational.

The Lady Pups began the day by dismantling Ellsworth in straight sets (25-19, 25-7) and then following up with a beat down of Junction City (25-13, 25-13) in straight sets as well.

Then came a battle with host Salina South, where McPherson lost in three sets (15-25, 26-16, 7-15) despite bouncing back in the middle set to make force the match into extra play. In an effort to make bracket play, the Lady Pups then took Smith Center to three extremely hard fought sets before losing their second match of day, losing set one by just a couple of points (23-25), hammering back for a walk away second set victory (25-17) and then taking Smith Center to the final points before dropping set three (14-16), sending them home for the day.

Salina South and Smith Center went 4-0 and 3-1 in pool play to qualify for bracket play, while Abilene finished 4-0 and Hays went 3-1 to fill out the bracket play spots from the other pool play.

Abilene and Salina South battled three sets before Abilene won the Invitational Championship (25-19, 25-27, 15-11), while Smith Center and Hays also went three sets before deciding third place with Smith Center prevailing (25-23, 17-25, 16-14).
