CANTON – With all the pre-season hype following them into the 2019 season, the Canton/Galva football team did little to make anyone doubt the hype as they rolled past Little River at home on Friday, winning 70-23.
It was one-year ago that Little River bounced the Eagles by 32 points in the season opener, and all Canton/Galva did after that was bury opponent after opponent before losing a second time in the State Eight-Man Division I semifinals.
While the game was never in doubt, it took until late in the fourth quarter before the Eagles put the scoreboard into the point rule final mode, despite out gaining the Redskins 495-208 in total offense and running 68 offensive plays to Little River’s 42.
All-State candidate Landon Everett led the Eagle attack by having a hand in five of the 10 touchdowns with an interception return for a score, a run for a score and passing for three other touchdowns, which accounted for all three of his completed passes on just seven attempted throws.
Everett tossed scores twice to Tyson Struber and another to Kinser Colgin while also leading the Eagles in rushing by gaining 185 yards on 14 carries.
Struber scored four times on the night, all in the first-half, two when running for 56 yards on six carries and the other two on pass plays.
Canton/Galva provided a three-headed monster for Little River to defend as Brayden Collins also scored once while running 22 times for 136 yards.
Graham Stephens led the Little River offense by running for 90 yards on 14 carries while scoring once. He combined with Jayden Garrison to complete seven of twelve passes for another 113 yards and the other two touchdowns.
Up next for Canton/Galva will be on Friday when they travel to Cottonwood Falls to battle with Chase County, while Little River will look to get into the win column when they make their 2019 home debut against Peabody.
