The McPherson Middle School 8th grade volleyball team hosted both Maize South and Salina Lakewood on Monday and sent Salina Lakewood home with two losses while Maize South got the best of both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams.
In the ‘A’ team matches, the Junior Lady Pups dropped straight sets (16-25, 22-25) to Maize South to begin the triangular before bouncing back and gaining two very close, nail biting victory sets (25-22, 26-24) over Salina Lakewood to finish out the afternoon. With the split, the 8th grade ‘A’ team now stands at 6-2 for the season.
“It was the tale of two matches tonight,” explained 8th Grade Head Coach Jacque Colgrove. “The girls played some of their best volleyball against Maize South, then after a break, didn’t quite come back ready to play against Lakewood and played some of the sloppiest and undisciplined volleyball of the season so far.”
Coach Colgrove continued her post-match reflections by saying, “However, they showed true determination by holding off several game points in the second set against Lakewood, before rally to tie the game at 24, then eventually taking the next two points for the victory. This 8th grade team is very athletic and it shows in their ability to make great hustle plays and saves. I am hoping they will be ready to play tomorrow from the beginning at Hays.”
When you look at the straight scores, the ‘B’ team Junior Lady Pups seemed to have a mirror image of the ‘A’ team for the day, losing in straight sets to Maize South (17-25, 11-25) before turning up the offense and dominating Salina Lakewood in two sets (25-12, 25-8). Like the ‘A’ team, the ‘B’ team is also now 6-2 for the season.
“The first game against Maize was pretty rough,” noted ‘B’ team coach Stevie Stockham. “The girls beat themselves by having 21 errors. They turned it around in the second game and made only nine errors. We have some serving and tip coverage to work on in practice, but it’s nothing we can’t handle. These girls kept a positive attitude all evening and they are truly a joy to coach!”
The 8th grade volleyball teams are on the long road to Hays on Tuesday to battle with both Hays and Garden City before they hit the road again on Thursday, going to Abilene to tangle with Abilene and Salina Lakewood.
