HESSTON – The McPherson High cross-country team sent 14 runners to compete in the 52-team Hesston Invitational on Thursday and brought home four medals in the process.
With each runner competing by their year in school, four Bullpups were awarded medals including Matt Powers who ran a 20:10.20 and finished 17th in the junior boys division, Courtney Eickbush medaled with the junior girls, running a 23:29.20 which was good for 5th, Evie Elder ran 12th with the sophomore girls and earned a medal by running a 23:25.10, and Tito Mendez who ran 7th with the freshman boys by covering the course in 20:06.80.
With medalist having to finish in the top-20 of their divisions, several other Bullpup harriers just missed out on earning a medal at Hesston as Justus Hampton, Brock Burgess, Skylar Lockard and Emily Heskett each finished within three spots of bringing home their own hardware.
“It was a beautiful day to run cross-country today in Hesston,” commented Bullpup Head Coach Aspen Lott. “Our athletes are always excited to run this course because it is flat, fast, and ran within their own grade level. I saw a lot of grit today. Our first miles were all around fast and our finishes were strong. We now need to work on spreading out that speed and carrying that rhythm throughout the entire race. We look to prep for some hills next week at Buhler.”
Next up for the Bullpup harriers will be on Thursday, September 19 when they run at the Buhler Invitational.
