HESSTON – Sophomore Morgan Becker led the Canton/Galva High cross-country team on Thursday when they sent seven runners to the 52 team Hesston Invitational by placing second in the Class 1-2-3A sophomore race with a run of 18:13.
According to what Eagle Head Coach Lyle Silsby said, “Even finishing second, I know Morgan was not real pleased with his time, but he has been battling a respiratory cold for a week now. I thought he did really well for not being able to breathe right.”
Considering the Eagles sent just seven runners, the fact that three totaled medaled was a big positive for the day as fellow sophomore Christian Darrah ran an 18:56, which was only a few seconds off his personal best, and placed just four spots behind Becker in sixth-place which earned him a medal.
For the Lady Eagles, senior Sofia Boninsegna ran her first official 5K race in Hesston and ran well enough with a time of 24:57 to place 16th.
“That is a pretty good way to start a high school senior season for Sofia,” noted Coach Silsby. “We are excited to see how much she can improve throughout the next seven weeks of the season.”
Referencing the remaining Eagle harriers, Coach Silsby concluded his post-race reflections by saying, “Ethan (Unruh), Aleah (Peres) and Andrew (Prieb) also all ran their first official 5K today as they are all newcomers to the high school team. I was pleased with all their efforts and was surprised by a couple of the times. Sarah (Kendall) has run the past two-years and improved her time by quite a bit from this same race last season. All the kids have been working hard and we just try to get a little faster each day.”
Next up for the Canton/Galva cross country runners will be next Thursday, September 19, when they travel to Herington.
