It was a tale of two games on Thursday for the McPherson Middle School football teams as the seventh-grade team earned a shutout victory over Newton at home while the eighth-grade squad traveled to Newton and came home with a loss.

A strong defense helped pave the way for the seventh-grade Junior Pups in earning their 14-0 win over Newton as they were able to keep Newton out of the end zone. Among the leaders on defense was Brock Richardson who led the team with seven tackles while the secondary swiped a whopping six passes as the Junior Pup ‘D’ created seven total turnovers.

On the offensive side, Catch Delaney ran for 98 yards total with 75 of them coming on a touchdown run. The other score came on a 16-yard pass from Carter Allen to Brock Richardson, while Brody Seidl scored the two-point conversion.

“For the second week in a row our defense came out and dominated,” noted seventh-grade Head Coach Brandt Busse. “We were extremely impressed with the effort our kids put forth. Could not be happier as a coaching staff right now with the way they are playing. Our guys up front on defense did a great job applying some pressure which led to our secondary racking up six interceptions as the defense did a great job of creating turnovers. Offensively we were not quite as explosive this week, but our offensive line did a great job fighting up front allowing us to rack up another 150 yards on the ground. We have a few things to work on this week to prepare for our next game.”

The eighth-grade team lost 27-14 to Newton.

According to Head Coach TJ Jackson, “We had some good moments, but just like our first week we followed those up with a lot of bad ones. We look forward to seeing improvement going into next week.”

Next Thursday the seventh-grade team will be at home once again, hosting Salina Lakewood, while the eighth-grade squad will be on the road again at Salina Lakewood.
