HESSTON – It was a gold medal day for the Smoky Valley cross country team as they scored a division champion in Ryan Heline while earning 12 total medals on Thursday at the Hesston Cross Country Invitational.

As a team, the Vikings moved down and competed in the Division 1A-3A and scored a third-place finish for the Lady Viking harriers while the Viking boys took fourth. Besides Heline, who took first in his division by running a 17:23, Lady Vikings Gracie Lambert and Ellise Peterson each took second in their divisions.

Other Lady Vikings that earned medals were Kajsa Peterson, Olivia Bengston and Lydia Peterson, while Viking boys that came home with medals were Garrett Huffman, Lukas Apel, Stephen Peterson, Trayton Miller, Adin Replogle, and Trevor Jones.

“We have the privilege of competing in Hesston amongst 52 other teams that competed as well,” commented Viking Head Coach Holly Toll. “The girls earned a 3rd place plaque and the boys were 4th. This year, we moved down to compete in the 1-3A division and we had some outstanding individual performances in their respective races according to grade level. I would like to see both of our teams close the time gap between our number one and number five runners. I look forward to starting to run as a varsity/junior varsity team all in the same race next week.”
Up next for the Smoky Valley harriers will be on Thursday, September 19, when they travel north to run at Clay Center.
