LINDSBORG – It took until late in the final quarter of play before anyone took charge of the scoreboard, but thankfully for the Viking fans of Smoky Valley, their football team did just that and closed out Friday evening with an 8-0 home victory over Haven.
Smoky Valley’s Andrew Peters bounced in from nine yards out in final 1:15 of the fourth quarter to finally get a score on the board and then Kort Sjogren plunged in for the two-point conversion to give the Vikings the hard-earned victory.
The Viking defense proved to be tough for Haven as they could not get into the end zone while barely making 204 yards on 43 offensive plays. Raleigh Wilson let the defensive effort for Smoky Valley with seven tackles which included one for a loss of yardage, while Peters and Dax Hopp each earned credit for four-and-one-half and four tackles each. Hopp made his tackles count as he had two quarterback sacks.
On offense the Vikings took 58 snaps and covered 252 yards with Trey Kennedy leading the way by running for 79 yards on 18 carries and Raleigh Wilson covered 64 yards on 14 runs. Jake Lukas only had three pass completions, but made them good for 61 yards, including a 32-yarder to Bruster Bengtson.
Now 1-1 for the season, the Vikings will get to entertain the home folks again next Friday when Nickerson comes to town.
