WINFIELD – Not only did the McPherson High freshman football team score their first win of the season, the controlled the line of scrimmage and literally seemed to score at will on Monday as they manhandled Winfield on the road 50-18.
Hunter Alvord and Jaytin Gumm finished early drives with scoring runs of seven and two yards respectively as the freshmen Pups went up 16-0 early with the help of two-point conversion by a Gumm run and a pass from Alvord to Caden Burris.
After Winfield scored late in the first, McPherson put the only points on the board in the second quarter when Gumm ran into the end zone from 20 yards out and Hadlee Backhus and Sam Becker connected on a pass for the two-point conversion, giving the freshmen Pups a commanding 24-6 lead going into the halftime break.
McPherson added three more scores in the third stanza on an 80-yard run by Gumm, a 10-yard scamper by Alvord and a 50-yard pass from Alvord to Becker, while Alvord connected with Tucker Pelnar for one two-point conversion, to put the freshmen Pups up comfortably at 44-6.
While Winfield tried their best with two scores in the fourth quarter, McPherson put it away when Alvord broke free on one more scoring run of 65 yards.
“I was excited to see this freshman group get their first win on the season on a very warm Monday evening,” said freshman Head Coach Heath Gerstner. “We have definitely improved from a week ago and that is great to see!”
Finishing up his coach reflections, Coach Gerstner added, “I thought we controlled the line of scrimmage and the defense played outstanding. It’s always our goal to get everyone a bunch of playing time and we were able to do that tonight. This group has a lot of talent, but we will really work this week to play faster and a notch more physical.”
Next up for the freshman Pups will be on Monday, September 23, when they go on the road to Andale.
