HAYSVILLE – The McPherson High girls tennis team continues on a roll as they traveled south on Monday to participate in the eight team Haysville/Campus Invitational and came home with another team championship as well as another gold for their number one doubles duo of Taylor Bruce and CeAnna Allen.
Team wise, the Lady Bullpups finished with 58 team points, a good distance ahead of second-place Wichita Collegiate who had 45 and third-place Arkansas City with 42. Other team playing were Hutchinson, Haysville/Campus Black, Haysville/Campus White, Wichita South and Wichita Heights.
After going unbeaten on Saturday at the Salina Central Invitational, the dynamic duo of Bruce and Allen continued to blow through their opponents by going 4-0 once again on Monday to take first in number one doubles.
In number two doubles, the tandem of Sydney Achilles and Patty Huerta were playing together for the first time this season yet were able to make the semifinals and then placed fourth after going 2-2 for the day.
Like the McPherson double teams, both Rachel Carlson and Perrin Schneider made the semifinals in their singles division, and while they both finished 3-1 for the day, Carlson placed second and Schneider finished third.
“It was a great day to be a Bullpup again with all four entries making the semifinals and two of the four making the championship matches,” explained Lady Bullpup Head Coach Tyler Brown. “It was a rematch for (Taylor) Bruce and (CeAnna) Allen against the duo of Arnett and Messenger of Arkansas City for the second tournament in a row with the Pups winning again 8-4. Sydney (Achilles) and Patty (Huerta), for playing for the first time together this year made up our other doubles team and had a solid performance on the day, making the semifinals as well to finish the day in fourth place.”
Referencing his number one singles player, Coach Brown concluded his coach reflections by saying, “Rachel (Carlson) showed amazing fight today being down 2-5 in the semifinals against a scrappy Gracie Foster from Hutchinson. Once Rachel dug in she became determined to get back in the match and get it into a tiebreaker to pull it off with a score of 8-7 (3). In the championship of the singles, Rachel just came up a little short by losing to Ella Graham of Wichita Collegiate to take second place.”
The Lady Bullpup netters will be back in action on Thursday when they play at the Buhler Invitational.
