It was game day as usual for the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade volleyball teams as they played host to Emporia and Salina South on Monday, and both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams won again in every match they played.
For the ‘A’ team, the Lady Junior Pups handled Emporia in straight sets (25-13, 25-19) before slipping in set one (22-25) with Salina South after which they took down the Cougars in the next two sets (25-20, 15-5) to win both matches on the day and bring their season record to 12-2.
“It took us a little while to get going in our first home match, but by the end of the night we were playing great volleyball,” explained seventh-grade Head Coach Shelley Bohme in her post-match reflections. “Against Emporia, we served the ball pretty well. Addie (Herrera), Addison (Chapman), and Cora (Pavlovich) put together some nice serving runs in that match. We then face a tough Salina South team that has improved since we saw them in our first match of the season. I thought we came out ready to play with a lot of energy and set one started pretty even, and then we got stuck in a serve receive that allowed South to string some points together and we were never able to catch back up. I was very proud of how the girls hung in there in set two to force the third set. Addison ((Chapman) and Kelby (Boughfman) did a great job getting the ball to our hitters and Addie (Herrera), Josie (Fitzmorris), and Haley (Hagemann) hit the ball well. Cora (Pavlovich), Kenzi (Kaufman), and Izabel (Backhus) continued to pass the ball up well, and are being more aggressive attack when we set it up to the back row. Set three was probably the best we’ve played all season as I though it was closer than the score showed. We jumped out to a quick lead with strong serving from Kelby (Boughfman) while Josie (Fitzmorris) and Addison (Chapman) followed up with serving runs of their own. Haley (Hagemann) was phenomenal at the net while the girls hustled, communicated, and covered the floor.”
Coach Bohme concluded her reflections by adding, “There were some great rallies in the matches, and the energy of the crowd really helped keep the girls fired up. What a way to cap off the past week! We are looking forward to getting some much-needed practice time as the ‘A’ team had a break from competition until next Monday.”
The seventh-grade ‘B’ team remained unbeaten on the season at 14-0 after dismantling Emporia (25-14, 25-14) and then taking down Salina South in straight sets (25-23, 25-13).
“We had a really slow start to the night, but the girls did an amazing job at keeping their spirits up and staying energetic throughout both games,” said ‘B’ team Coach Abby Bradstreet. “They played amazing against Salina South in the second set, it was probably the best I’ve seen them play all season. They were setting the ball up, getting some kills, and communicating really well. It’s been a long stretch of volleyball for them and we are looking forward to some time off so we can practice and tweak a few things before our ‘B’ team tournament this weekend.”
Next up for the Middle School seventh-grade volleyball ‘B’ team will be on Saturday, September 21 when they travel to Newton to play in the Newton-Chisholm ‘B’ Tournament beginning at 9:00 a.m.
