SALINA – It was a busy night for the McPherson Middle School eighth grade volleyball teams as they went on the road to Salina and battled both Salina South and Emporia, with three of the four matches played going to three sets, though the Junior Lady Pups came home with three victories in the process.

The eighth grade ‘A’ team battled three long sets with Emporia to begin the evening before losing (20-25, 25-20, 10-15). They then bounced back and took down host Salina South in straight sets (25-16, 5-14), giving them a season record overall at 9-5.

“Just like every other night this season, it was another tough night of volleyball,” explained eighth-grade Head Coach Jacque Colgrove. “In the first set against Emporia, we got off to a hot start before Emporia started getting in a rhythm and aggressively attacking the ball which we didn’t seem to have an answer for. We played a little better against Salina South, but still haven’t played like we are capable of playing. I am looking forward to seeing what these girls can do when they put together a full match.”

In the eighth grade ‘B’ team matches, the Junior Lady Pups had to battle for six sets as both matches went three sets before McPherson scored their win against Emporia 5-13, 21-25, 25-9) and then again against host Salina South 25-10, 24-26, 15-13). The ‘B’ team now stands at 11-3 for the season.

‘B’ team Coach Stevie Stockham noted, “Overall the girls played really well tonight. However, we struggle with finishing and winning the second sets, Kaya (Lowery) and Cailey (Pearson) showed great leadership skills on the court. Thankfully, our schedule is much nicer this week and we have several practices to improve our skills until the next game.”

The Middle School eighth grade ‘B’ volleyball team will be back on the court on Saturday, September 21 when they play in the Circle ‘B’ team Volleyball Tournament beginning at 9:00 a.m.
