CAMPUS – When the McPherson High junior varsity girls tennis team decides to show up and really play their best they can literally dominate the day and that is exactly what they did on Thursday at the Haysville/Campus Junior Varsity Invitational, they not only won the team championship – they won all four individual championships as well!
If you want to see near perfection, then today may have been as close as a Lady Bullpup team can get as they ran way with the team title with 20 points while Salina South and Haysville/Campus Black tied for second with eight.
Individually it may be hard to match today again as all four McPherson individual participants went undefeated and brought home gold for the day.
Sophomores Taylor Berger and Grace Witte both went 4-0 in their respective number one and number two singles divisions, while fellow sophomores Maddie Dobson and Lakynn Lippelmann won in number one doubles and sophomore Amethyst Hale teamed with freshman Loghan Engelbrecht to take the title in number two doubles. That means the Lady Bullpup junior varsity went 16-0 on the day, outstanding play it was.
“The girls showed up to play today,” chimed Coach Ricardo Sanchez. “We finally had a day where the weather wasn’t unbearable, and the girls took full advantage of it. I talked with all of the girls throughout the day about constructing points and executing their shots. They were able to make adjustments to cut down on errors and play clean matches.”
Coach Sanchez had particular praise for one Lady Bullpup, adding, “I was really proud of Taylor Berger, as she had a couple of tough matches. As soon as she made a few tweaks to her play, she was able to keep the ball in play longer and construct points to where she was able to be aggressive and take control of her matches.”
Concluding his reflections on the day, Coach Sanchez pointed out the obvious, saying, “Always a good day when all the girls are playing well.”
Next up for the Lady Bullpup junior varsity tennis team will be on Tuesday, September 24 when they play at Derby.
