BUHLER – Playing their third varsity meet in just six days, the McPherson High girl’s tennis team still separated themselves from the other seven teams at the Buhler Invitational on Thursday to not only score the team championship, but they won three of the four individual player divisions as well.
The Lady Bullpups rolled up 29 points as a team to take the Invitational Championship, five points ahead of runner-up and host Buhler. The next closest team was Sacred Heart with 13. Concordia, Clay Center, Salina South, Valley Center and Wichita Classica were the other teams participating.
Leading the way on the court itself was the dynamic duo of Taylor Bruce and CeAnna Allen as they went 3-0 and won yet another invitational championship in number one doubles, while the tandem of sophomore’s Carley Malm and Patty Huerta also went 3-0 and brought home gold in the number two doubles division. The victory by Bruce and Allen keeps them undefeated for the season.
In singles action, Perrin Schneider, also just a sophomore, came home with gold as well by going 3-0 and winning the number two singles division, while senior Rachel Carlson finished 2-1 on the day and placed third in number one singles.
“Today was a total team effort,” explained Lady Bullpup Head Coach Tyler Brown. “To have played our third varsity meet in six days showed our fight and tenacity. Rachel (Carlson) showed those two things today as she was banged up and not feeling well but was able to still go 2-1 and showed tremendous leadership as a senior on finishing the day when you are not 100% and not feeling best. Taylor (Bruce) and CeAnna (Allen) anchored the team going 3-0 to improve on the year to 18-0 overall. They will get to see how they stack up against some of the finest teams in Kansas at the Tournament of Champions next Saturday.”
Coach Brown concluded his coach reflections talking about the two champions of the day, saying, “Perrin (Schneider) really didn’t get pushed today at number two singles until the finals when she played the number one seed from Buhler, Brittany Teufel. It was a back and forth match until Perrin found a few patterns in developing the point that made her highly successful. That’s what I love about her game even when she may be down or in a tight match, she is constantly thinking of how to construct the point to be successful or how can she expose a weakness in her opponents’ game. She went on to win 8-4 in the finals. Lastly, Carley (Malm) and Patty (Huerta) turned it on in the finals when trailing Buhler’s Yutzy and Bimey 5-6 to go up 7-6 then to ultimately win in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-2). But it was the confidence to start hitting through the ball that helped them finish strong in the finals. It was fun to see that confidence grow in a match and to see them close out a match in playing to win!”
The Lady Bullpups now have nine days to prep and practice for the always huge 16-team Tournament of Champions in Wichita, hosted by Wichita Collegiate on Saturday, September 28.
