CLAY CENTER – It was a successful day of running for the Smoky Valley cross country team on Thursday as they ran in the Clay Center Invitational and came home with a team and individual championship as well as 15 medals.
The Vikings Ryan Heline brought home an individual championship by finishing first in the varsity boys division while the Lady Vikings won the girls division as a team which included four runners placing in the top ten – Gracie Lambert, Ellise Peterson, Breanna Priddy and Kajsa Peterson.
Overall for the day, the Viking boys had four runners medal while the Lady Vikings had seven girls medal.
“I’m proud of how the girls competed today,” noted Viking Head Coach Holly Toll. “Our gap between our first and fifth place runners is getting smaller. We need to continue to lessen it each week. Gracie (Lambert) and Ellise (Peterson) ran a strong race up front, with Breanna (Priddy), Kajsa (Peterson) and Olivia (Bengtson) supporting them for a first-place finish as a team. Ryan (Heline) ran a great race against Jarrett Pfizenmaier from Clay Center in the boy’s race. The boys finished third as a team.”
Next up for the Viking cross country runners will be on Tuesday, September 24 when they run at Southeast of Saline in Gypsum.
