MOUNDRIDGE – In 2018 Solomon was the state runner-up for 8-Man Division I and began this season with two easy wins, but then they came to Moundridge where the Wildcats were grumbling about being hammered by Bennington.
The grumbling turned into action and thanks to some tweaking of the defense combined with a 38-point second half outburst you have a major shake up of 8-Man Division I football as the Wildcats not only beat Solomon, they did it in by 20 points, 52-32!
Both teams scored in the first quarter, but only Moundridge found the end zone in the second which meant they had a scoring advantage, 14-8, going into the halftime break.
While the Gorillas managed to find the end zone three times compared to the Wildcats only finding it twice in quarter three, they also missed on two of their extra-point conversions which meant Moundridge headed into the final quarter still holding a 30-26 lead on the scoreboard.
All Moundridge did in the final quarter of play was seal the deal by scoring three times and holding Solomon to just one score, earning them the huge 52-32 upset victory.
Overall, Solomon had the ball for 75 plays in just over 29 minutes while Moundridge just missed the 20-minute mark for having the offense on the field and only snapped the ball 51 times, but yet the Wildcats out gained the Gorillas 371-352 in yardage. And when you consider the fact that the Wildcats were flagged for 11 penalties and turned the ball over three times, you begin to realize the magnitude of the victory.
Corbin Unruh led the Wildcat offense by throwing for two scores and running for four more while gaining 123 yards on just seven carries, while Daniel Kaufman and Collin Kohl each took 15 tokes of the ball and covered 137 and 48 yards respectively. Jon Schlosser and Brady Helms caught the pair of Unruh scoring passes.
On defense, Schlosser and Helms were the Wildcats that led the stops of the Gorilla offense as they had 14 and 13.5 tackles each while Helms had 3.5 stops for losses. Daniel Kaufman and Garrett Doherty each had a pair of quarterback sacks as well.
The victory gives the Wildcats a 2-1 mark for the season as they now prep to play host to Pratt Skyline next Friday. Pratt/Skyline is 3-0 on the season after a win over Argonia on Friday.
