NEWTON – The McPherson Middle School seventh-grade ‘B’ volleyball team rolled into Newton on Saturday unbeaten on the season and they made sure everyone understand why by dominating four straight matches to win the Newton 7th Grade ‘B’ Team Tournament.
With the winning of the weekend tournament, the seventh-grade spikers are now 18-0 for the season.
“These girls had another great day of volleyball,” explained excited Head Coach Abby Bradstreet. “I’m so proud of them and all they have accomplished so far this season. They have improved so much since the first game and did a really nice job of communicating, setting the ball up, and being aggressive at the net.”
In pool play the Lady Junior Pups showed no mercy as they shutdown Salina Lakewood in straight sets (25-13, 25-11) before dismantling Prairie Hills in much the same manner (25-10, 25-8).
Being matched up for a second time with Prairie Hills in the tournament semifinals proved to be no problem as the Lady Junior Pups buried them once again in straight sets (25-11, 25-11).
When Hutchinson outscored McPherson in the first set of the tournament finals, 18-25, the girls simply got back on the court and totally dominated the rest of the match (25-6, 15-4) to be crowned tournament champions.
“We had some unforced errors in the first set against Hutchinson but were able to settle down in the next two and win the tournament,” added Coach Bradstreet.
Coach Bradstreet concluded her post-tournament reflections with many player praises, saying, “Ada (Prose), Ellie (Bower), and Paisley (VanCampen) had some great plays at the net today while Kaitlyn (Bergstrom), Clarea (Williams) and Faith (Klein) did a good job of covering the back row and getting some good passes to our setters. Addie (Harlin) and Reese (Elliott) continued to have a great day serving and Reese (Buchman), Aria (Janusz), and Kadee (Stewart) did a great job at setting the ball up. They’ve come so far since the beginning of the season and I can’t wait to see how they improve throughout the remainder of our season.”
Next up for the MMS seventh-grade volleyball teams will be on Monday when they travel back to Newton for a triangular with Newton-Chisholm and Hutchinson.
