TOWANDA – Starting out strong then struggling at the end of the day, the McPherson Middle School eighth grade ‘B’ volleyball team finished 3-1 at the Circle Round-Robin Tournament in Towanda on Saturday.
It was all Lady Junior Pups in the first two matches of the day as they handled Newton without much issue in straight sets (25-16, 25-15) and then did much the same with Prairie Hills, also in straight sets (25-15, 25-20) to begin the day 2-0.
But then they ran into Hutchinson and host Circle, where they found the sets more of a battle and each match went three sets. Against Hutchinson, McPherson dropped the middle set but won the first and third to stay unbeaten on the day (25-16, 21-25, 15-9) before winning set one (25-18) against host Circle before running out of juice in the final two sets and losing (15-25, 6-15).
“The girls had another long day of volleyball today,” noted Coach Stevie Stockham. “They started the morning off strong and slowly fizzled out by the time they played Circle. I am proud of the girls for being aggressive in the back row and trying new things out. Can’t wait to play again on Monday.”
For the season the Junior Lady 8th grade Pups are now 14-4 and only get one day of rest before returning to the court on Monday when they play host to Hutchinson and Newton-Chisholm in a triangular.
