GODDARD – After a solid two matches, the McPherson High junior varsity volleyball team ran into three buzz saws at the Goddard Eisenhower Tournament on Saturday, the Lady Bullpups finished the day 2-3 and in fourth place.

McPherson started out the day on fire by getting a solid straight set victory over Wichita Northwest (25-10, 25-17) and kept the energy up in their second match as they took care of Goddard (25-20, 25-18) in straight sets as well.

It was at that point that the Lady Bullpups began to tangle with the buzz saws of the tournament as they lost in straight sets to both Wichita Bishop Carroll (12-25, 20-25) and Goddard Eisenhower (11-25, 17-25) to reach the third-place matchup with Maize. Against Maize, it turned into a true battle in which McPherson lost in straight sets, but only lost the first one, 20-25, before going to the final point of battle before losing the second set, 26-28.

“We played with six players most of the day which is unheard of in high school volleyball,” noted Junior Varsity Coach Melissa Bradshaw. “I really believed in these six players and they did a great job throughout the day. We started strong with quick wins over Wichita Northwest and Goddard and we finished pool play with Bishop Carroll, who we know to be one of the best junior varsity teams we will compete against. Their coach even complimented us after the match saying it was the best one, they’ve played all season. I was so proud of them heading into bracket play.”

Coach Bradshaw concluded her coach reflections talking about the bracket play by saying, “We weren’t quite ready to go against host Goddard Eisenhower in the semis. Our leadership began to falter, and we lost confidence. I though we fought back in set two, but just fell short. In the third-place match against Maize, it was back and forth the entire match. Even though we came up short, coaches and officials alike told our girls they loved how hard they played all day. It makes me proud! This group is really something special and we just need to continue to play mentally tough all the time and compete against tough teams.”

Next up for the Lady Bullpup junior varsity spikers will be on Tuesday when they travel to Buhler for a triangular with Buhler and Circle.
