MAIZE – The McPherson Middle School girl’s tennis team took nine Lady Pups to Maize on Monday to compete in the Maize South tennis tournament and came home with a fourth-place team finish while individually the team placed within the top four in four of the six divisions of competition.
McPherson scored 35 team points, placing them one point ahead of fifth-place Newton. Andover won the tournament with 53 points while Maize South Gold (51) and Andover Central (44) rounded out the top three.
Riggs Kuhn had the best day for the Lady Junior Pups as she finished second in number one singles while Kyndall Sandbo placed third playing number two singles and the duo of Lauren Rogers and Paige Stucky placed third at number one doubles. The tandem of Taiya Young and Raina Schmidt place fourth in number two doubles.
“Riggs (Kuhn) battled herself back into the championship match and then lost in a lengthy tiebreaker,” explained Lady Junior Pup Head Coach Paul Reichenberger. “The final score of the singles championship was 6-7 (8-10). This match shows that this young eighth grader has a bright future in the tennis program in McPherson.”
