HESSTON – Being the lone representative for Elyria Christian School on Tuesday at the nine-team Hesston Invitational, Shelby Bontrager made the best of her opportunity and went 3-1 for the day to finish fifth overall.

Bontrager hit a major bump right from the start when she lost 5-8 to Loren May of Conway Springs in her first match of the afternoon.

Undaunted, Bontrager bounced back to dismantle Taylor Vogt of Haven by winning 8-0 before handling Maggie Carlson of Hesston by a score of 8-3.

Going up against Hayle Huges of Hutchinson Trinity in the finals of the consolation bracket, Bontrager once again rose to the occasion and put Huges away by a score of 8-2, giving her a fifth-place medal for the day.

Bontrager is now 11-5 on the season and will be back in action on Thursday when she plays at Andover.
