MAIZE – It was a rough afternoon trip to Maize for the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade football team as they struggled on offense and lost 26-8 to Maize Middle School on Tuesday. It was the seventh graders first loss of the season.

The offense was only able to ground out 93 yards on the ground and just another 81 through the air for only 174 yards total in the loss.

Carter Allen provided the only scoring for the Junior Pups when he connected with Bishop Brown on a short three-yard scoring pass at the end of a long offensive drive in the third quarter.

“This was a tough loss for our guys,” explained seventh-grade Head Coach Brandt Busse. “Maize came out and got up on us early in the first half and we could never get going. Offensively we struggled as we had some miscues with wrong routes and some dropped balls. One bright spot was our third quarter drive where we sustained a seven-minute drive to score our only touchdown.”

Speaking of the defense, Coach Busse added, “Defensively we could not stop Maize on the ground in the first half. We made some adjustments at halftime and did a much better job in the second half, but one or two missed assignments led to some more scores by Maize. Leading the way in tackles was Jase Fitzmorris and Bishop Brown with eight tackles each.”

Coach Busse concluded his reflections of the day by saying, “One of the things the coaching staff really enjoys about this team is that they do not give up. No matter the circumstances they do not quit. I am very proud of their effort. They are an extremely competitive group and I know they will bounce back.”

Next up for the seventh-grade football team will be a road trip north to Salina South on Thursday, October 3.
