MAIZE – Despite the game being called at halftime due to lightening, the McPherson Middle School eighth-grade football team was still able to score a 16-0 shutout victory on the road with Maize Middle School.
The big play of the game came when just before halftime, Javyn Alexander stepped in front of a Maize pass and intercepted it before dashing 80 yards down the field for the final touchdown of the game thanks to several solid blocks by his fellow Junior Pups.
“Defensively we did pretty well,” explained eighth-grade Head Coach TJ Jackson. “One tough thing about middle school football is getting film on other teams or information that can help you ahead of time. As well, as a middle school we try to make sure we are teaching our kids the right way to play and not just blitzing every play or running things that don’t help our kids grow. Maize did a lot of the other and it caused us some problems offensively, but our kids kept working and chipping away.”
Speaking of his defense, Coach Jackson concluded his coach’s reflections on the game by saying, “Our defense gave us really good field position multiple times. We then dropped two touchdown passes and two other passes that would have been very big plays, so we have to make sure we are taking advantage of every shot we get. Right before half our defense came up big when Javyn (Alexander) interecepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown. We went into the half up 16-0 and that is how it would remain due to weather ending the game early.”
Next up for the eighth-grade football team will be on Thursday, October 3 when they play host to Salina South.
