ACHILLES WINS BULLPUP INVITATIONAL!

It was a good day to be a McPherson High cross country runner as they hosted their annual Bullpup Cross Country Invitational at Wall Park on Thursday and scored a gold medal, first-place finish with the Bullpup varsity boys as Cody Achilles won that division and the varsity boys took second as a team.
Achilles ran an 18:22.5 to outrun everybody in the field while the Bullpup boys scored 54 team points to finish second to invitational champion Salina Central who had 39. El Dorado, Hays and Wichita Heights rounded out the team standings as those five were the only schools to run full teams at the event.
Besides Achilles, the Bullpup placed true freshman Tito Mendez in the top-10 as he finished seventh while senior Justus Hampton ran twelfth. Also finishing in the top 20 for the day were junior Matthew Powers at sixteenth, freshman Brock Burgess at eighteenth and senior Riley Shelton at nineteenth.
For the varsity girl’s division, junior Courtney Eickbush was the top Lady Bullpup runner as she ran a 22:18.6 and finished fifth, while sophomore Evie Elder placed tenth, freshman Emily Heskett ran sixteenth and sophomore Marissa Pearcy finished at twenty-fourth. They were the only Lady Bullpup runners, so the team did not qualify for the team standings which was won by Hays, followed by Salina Central and Hutchinson.
Freshman Roman Mai earned a top-10 finish in the boy’s junior varsity race while Ethan Pickerell also landed in the top-20 by placing eighteenth.
McPherson did not have any Lady Bullpups run in the junior varsity girls run.
Next up for the Bullpup harriers will not be until Saturday, October 5 when they travel south to Newton to run in the 18-team Newton Invitational.
