MARION – When your top runners are resting up for a huge weekend race ahead, the Inman cross country team did the best they could with just two runners at the Marion Cross Country Invitational on Thursday.

Lady Teuton harrier Hannah Martisko came through and ran a personal best 22:50.61 for the 5K race to finish seventh and earning herself a medal for her work.

The only other Teuton running was Dawn Gunter in the girls’ junior varsity race, where she placed sixth and finished with a medal as well while running a personal best time of 25:43.29.

“What do you do when you have a great week of practice?” asked Teuton Cross Country Head Coach Jay Parsons. “You go out and run a personal best and do it in outstanding fashion, and that is exactly what Hannah Martisko and Dawn Gunter did on a course that was hosting its inaugural race.”

“Hannah (Martisko) finished in the medals and considering she ran almost two minutes faster than her previous best is what made her performance outstanding,” added Coach Parson. “Dawn (Gunter) did much the same by running more than three minutes faster than her previous best which made it two outstanding performances for the day. Prior to the race, I told the girls they have had a great week of practice so there is no reason to let it go to waste, and they definitely did not let that happen.”

The four mainstays of the Teuton cross country team (Nicholas Martisko, Brenton Thiessen, Peter Buller, and Aisjha Miles) did not compete at Marion due to the fact they will be running on Saturday at the Rim Rock Farm High School Cross Country Classic in Lawrence.

Next up for the Teuton harriers as a whole team will come next Thursday, October 3 when they run at Harvey County East Lake at a meet hosted by Berean Academy.

“That next meet gives us plenty of time to recover but to also continue to work and get stronger and faster,” concluded Coach Parson. “Some larger schools will be there which should make it a very competitive meet.”
