ABILENE – Mother nature did a favor for Abilene on Friday night as lightening began to fill the air during the Cowboys halftime homecoming adventure, the McPherson High football team was given an early victory as the officials called the game at halftime with the Bullpups holding a commanding 48-3 advantage, giving them the victory.
The Bullpups didn’t waste much time as Dylan Rinker connected with Trey Buckbee for a 46-yard scoring pass early in the first quarter and when Drew Schrader connected on the extra-point kick, McPherson thought they were off and running.
But Abilene gave them something to think about for a few moments as they connected on a 43-yard field goal when they got the ball back on offense to stay within four at 7-3 for at least a few minutes of the battle.
Before the end of the quarter, Kaleb Hoppes broke loose for a 40-yard scamper into the end zone giving the Bullpups a 14-3 advantage after Schrader hit the extra-point kick.
At the beginning of the second quarter, Cody Stufflebean broke through and blocked an Abilene punt attempt which Hoppes turned into a 44-yard scoring pass to Gus Ruddle, and at that point the scoreboard was to go crazy for the Bullpups.
By the end of the quarter McPherson had scored on runs of 1-yard by Aiden Hoover, 17 yards by Matt Ramey and a 15 yarder by Jakob Feil before Hoppes connected with Feil for a short 8-yard pass and catch score to finish out the scoring for the day and give the Bullpups the dominating 48-3 victory.
The Bullpups dominated not just on the scoreboard, but on the stat sheet as well as they held an 11-2 advantage in first downs and a 263 to 38-yard advantage in total offense even though Abilene ran two more plays than the Bullpups 27-25.
Rinker and Hoppes combined to complete seven of eight passes for 121 yards and the three touchdowns for the Bullpups while the Cowboys only completed two of nine for a minus-4 yards.
Leading the running attack for McPherson was Feil who rambled for 76 yards on just nine carries while Hoppes covered 47 on four carries. Besides Ruddle and Buckbee covering 44 and 45 yards on scoring passes for their only receptions of the game, Aaron Powell caught three passes for 27 yards.
On defense, the big four led the way as Brycen Labertew recorded six tackles, Stufflebean had five while Mason Thrash and Jayton Alexander each had four, with three of the four tackles by Thrash being solo.
With the dominating victory, the Bullpups are now 4-0 as they prep for the huge rivalry battle coming up next Friday with Buhler at home in McPherson College Stadium. The Crusaders will also come into the game at 4-0 after handling Mulvane 25-14 on Friday.
