HESSTON – It was a rough evening for the Smoky Valley football team as they went on the road Friday to Hesston and took a tumble as the Swathers handed the Vikings a 35-8 defeat.

While the Vikings struggled to get the offense rolling in the first half, Hesston scored once in the first quarter and two more times in the second to hold a commanding 20-0 advantage as the two teams headed to the halftime break.

Hesston added another score in the third plus one early in the fourth before Smoky Valley was finally able to break into the end zone on a 65-yard run by Trey Kennedy. Raleigh Wilson dove in to get the two-point conversion which made the final score 35-8 in favor of Hesston.

While Smoky Valley picked up 196 yards on 43 offensive plays, the Swathers rolled up 386 on 10 more offensive plays. Hesston had the ball on offense for almost 28 minutes while the Vikings barely made it past 20 minutes.

Jake Lucas only completed three of nine passes for just 31 yards while tossing one interception, but Kennedy did crack the 100-yard mark rushing by getting 103 yards on 13 carries much of which came on the late touchdown run.

Defensively, Have Lysell-Stewart, Raleigh Wilson and Andrew Peters were very active in trying to stop the Swathers as they led the Vikings with 8.5, 7.5 and 6 tackles respectively.

With the loss, the Vikings are now just 1-3 for the season and will prep to play host to Clay Center next Friday. Clay Center will come into the game 2-2 for the season and fresh off a 38-26 win over Chapman.
