HERINGTON – Finishing off a busy week where they had three volleyball dates, the Canton/Galva volleyball team traveled to Herington on Saturday and placed fourth by winning just two out of five matches at the Herington Invitational.

In pool play the Lady Eagles began the day with a hard fought three set win over Council Grove (25-22, 14-25, 25-24) before dropping a match in straight sets to Sedgwick (15-25, 13-25). After beating Centre in straight sets (25-17, 25-22), Canton/Galva qualified for bracket play by placing second in pool play.

“We traveled to Herington to end our busy week of volleyball,” noted Lady Eagle Head Coach Cloe Hedlund. “We started strong in pool play with a win over Council Grove before facing a very strong Sedgwick team and struggling to keep things going. We finished off our pool play with a win against Centre to get second coming out of pool play.”

The battle with Rural Vista did not go so well for the Lady Eagles in the days semifinals as they were humbled in straight sets (13-25, 13-25) before struggling again in the third-place game as they lost to Sacred Heart (18-25, 12-25) to finish fourth overall for the day.

“In the match to get into the championship we could not keep our offense moving against Rural Vista,” continued Coach Hedlund. “We then played Sacred Heart for third and again struggled to keep the ball on our side of the court consistently.”

Coach Hedlund concluded her post tournament by saying, “This was a tough and tiring week for our players as there was a lot of good volleyball played. We continue to work on keeping our energy up and working as one unit on the court.”

Next up for the Lady Eagle spikers will come on Tuesday when they travel to Centre for a triangular with Centre and Elyria Christian.
