It was a solid day for the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade volleyball teams on Monday as both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams made clean sweeps of their home triangular with Salina Lakewood, Concordia and Newton.

The seventh-grade ‘A’ team jumped on Salina Lakewood in their first set of the day before handling them in set two for a straight set (25-6, 25-21) victory, then followed that up with a hard fought straight set take down of Concordia (25-23, 25-16) and finishing out the day with a straight set sweep of Newton (25-14, 25-14).

The ‘A’ team is now 16-3 for the season.

“With tonight being a Quad, it made for a long evening of volleyball,” noted seventh-grade Head Coach Shelley Bohme. “But these girls powered through to go 3-0 on the night. We changed our rotation a little and worked on it in practice this past week, and I thought the girls ran it well. We came out and had a great first set against Lakewood, then had some unforced errors that made set two closer than it should have been. The Concordia match was a good one as we struggled with their first server and had to dig ourselves out of a hole after being down 0-8. They had one hitter who they set almost every time, and we adjusted and covered well. I was extremely proud of the teamwork and hustle as the girls did not give up and were able to carry that momentum into the second set.”

Coach Bohme concluded her post-match reflections by saying, “After sitting a match, it took a little bit to get focused again and get on a roll against Newton. Once again, I saw some great hustle and teamwork. Our ability to make good passes and set the ball up and attack has improved tremendously. We are looking forward to playing at home again on Thursday as we near the end of the season.”

Still sitting with just one loss on the season, the seventh-grade ‘B’ Lady Junior Pups pretty much dominated all three of their matches for the day, starting out by steamrolling Salina Lakewood in straight sets (25-13, 25-14) and then handling Concordia, also in straight sets (25-18, 25-17). They then closed out their day and moved their season mark to 22-1 by hammering on Newton (25-7, 25-15).

“Overall the girls did a really great job today,” explained ‘B’ team Coach Abby Bradstreet. “They did a nice job setting the ball up and covering tight plays at the net. We struggled a bit with our passing and serving against Concordia but were able to tweak some things for the final game against Newton. These girls have done an incredible job this year at communicating and supporting each other. Their enthusiasm for the sport definitely shows and helps them to be so successful.”

Next up for the MMS seventh-grade Junior Lady Pup spikers will be to host a dual on Thursday with Salina Lakewood and Hays.
