HUTCHINSON – It was a successful trip to Hutchinson on Tuesday for the McPherson Middle School girls tennis team as they had Lady Junior Pups playing in eight divisions at the Hutchinson Middle School Tournament and came home with a first-place finish, two second-place finishes and two third-place finishes as well as a third place team finish.

While Andover took the team title by a sizable margin with 61 points, Salina Lakewood just edged out the Lady Junior Pups for second with 43 while McPherson scored 42 and placed third. Other teams participating were Prairie Hills, Haysville West, Newton Chisholm, Salina South and Hutchinson.

All four of the McPherson doubles teams finished in the top three of their divisions.

Leading the way for the Lady Junior Pups was the number two doubles duo of Kyndall Sandbo and Taiya Young took as they took first in a match that was ended early while Sandbo and Young held a 2-1 lead before the rains came.

The number three and four doubles tandems of Kennedy Tully and Jadin Nowell plus Courtney Delaney and Eva Malm scored second-place finishes while the Lady Junior Pups number one doubles duo of Lauren Rogers and Paige Stucky took third.

In singles, number one player Riggs Kuhn lead the McPherson contingent with a third-place finish.

“Overall it was a great day of tennis,” noted MMS Girls Tennis Head Coach Paul Reichenberger. “Our girls played well as a team and I was very proud of each student athlete’s effort out on the court.”

One of the big highlights for the McPherson team was the fan support as a large group of over 100 lead worthy students took time after a scheduled field trip at the Dillion lecture series and stopped by the tennis courts after lunch to support the Junior Lady Pups.

It was an amazing moment to watch 100-plus middle schoolers support their classmates during a tennis match.”
