It was a big deal to play at home on Tuesday for the McPherson High junior varsity volleyball team and they showed that appreciation by sweeping both their matches with Clearwater and Rose Hill.

“Playing at home was big for our junior varsity team,” noted Lady Bullpup junior varsity Coach Melissa Bradshaw. “We’ve been talking a lot about ‘ending the cycle’ of not being consistent during matches and for the first time tonight, I felt like all the pieces started to come together.”

After a solid run through set one (25-15) with Clearwater, the Lady Bullpups stumbled as the visitors got the better of them in a close fought second set (21-25) before they bounced back and turned the tables around in another hard fought third set, getting the final win (25-22) to take victory in the match itself.

Sophia Herrera led the JV in the first match with 15 kills and 9 digs while Kaylee Zeitlow recorded 24 assists.

“We dominated Clearwater in set one,” said Coach Bradshaw as she continued her post-match reflections. “Lexi (Kynaston) served several five point runs in the match to get us going. Avery (Strathman) was extremely vocal and encouraging of her teammates. Although we faltered in set two, we finished business by playing strong defense in set three.”

In the second match of the evening, the Lady Bullpups had what Coach Bradshaw referred to as ‘their best match all season’ as they took down Rose Hill in straight sets (25-13, 25-17).

Coach Bradshaw concluded her reflections by saying, “Our match against Rose Hill may have been our best all season. We appeared confident, minimized our errors and handled a complicated lineup extremely well. Sophia (Herrera), Lexi (Kynaston), and Megan (Lulloff) have earned varsity time and were missing at various parts of the night. I thought Maliya (Paine) and Tailynn (Buettgenbach) did a fantastic job of stepping in any position we needed them to tonight and helping their team out. I am extremely proud of the growth this team is showing.”

The Lady Bullpup junior varsity spikers will next be on the court when they travel to Wichita on Saturday for an Invitational hosted by Wichita Bishop Carroll.
