GODDARD – Giving the varsity a rest, the McPherson High girls tennis team took their junior varsity Lady Bullpups to Goddard on Tuesday and took second place at the varsity Goddard Quad.

Team wise, the Lady Bullpups scored five points which tied for second with Wichita Independent, well behind first place Conway Springs who scored 11. Host Goddard ended up with three team points.

“I thought this group did very well since some of them were playing in their first varsity meet,” noted Lady Bullpup Head Coach Tyler Brown. “To get second as a team at this level says a lot about these girls that played today!”

The Lady Bullpups were led by the two tandems of doubles teams as both Lakynn Lippelman and Amethyst Hale, plus Grace Witte and Kinley Dietrich finished the day at 2-1 and placed second in number one and number two doubles respectively.

“Our doubles anchored the team today with both getting second place and only dropping one match on the day,” pointed out Coach Brown.

Taylor Berger and Loghan Engelbrecht place third and fourth in number one and number two singles.

“Although some of our younger ones still have much to learn at this level, Taylor (Berger) showed what it means to fight and never give up on the court,” said Coach Brown. “Taylor was down 0-5 in her second match against Goddard and came back to win in a tiebreaker! I absolutely love seeing girls continuing to fight and believing that wherever they find themselves in the match, they can turn it around!”

Coach Brown concluded his coach reflections by saying, “All of these girls except two of them will be able to use this varsity meet as a warmup to hopefully go make some noise at the Junior Varsity AVCTL meet this Thursday.”

The Lady Bullpup Junior Varsity netters will play host on Thursday to the Junior Varsity AVCTL Tournament beginning at 10:00 a.m. Besides the Lady Bullpups, other teams will be Augusta, Buhler, Circle, El Dorado, Wellington, Wichita Collegiate and Winfield.
