SALINA – Between the McPherson Middle School 8th grand ‘A’ and ‘B’ team volleyball teams, they scored five wins and one loss on Monday at a quad in Salina hosted by Salina Lakewood.

The first two matches of the day for the eighth grade ‘A’ team spikers went three, hard fought sets before the Junior Lady Pups were able to take down host Salina Lakewood (25-22, 24-26, 15-11) and Newton-Chisholm (25-19, 16-25, 15-10). Unfortunately, the good fortunes fell short in the final match of the day as they lost by just two points in straight sets to Concordia (23-25, 23-25). Going 3-2 for the day puts the Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ team at 12-7 for the season.

“The girls played some good volleyball tonight,” noted ‘A’ team Head Coach Jacque Colgrove. “Against a great Concordia team, lack of communication and unforced errors hurt us, but I am proud of the girls for not giving up against Concordia when being down by eight towards the end.”

Coach Colgrove concluded her coach reflections by adding, “Just like the previous times we played Lakewood and Newton, the girls get on a roll, then lose momentum and allow the opposing team to come back. I definitely enjoyed watching the long rallies and hustle plays all night long.”

By winning all three of their matches, the eighth grade ‘B’ team is now 17-4 on their season. Against Salina Lakewood in the first match the Junior Lady Pups scored a (25-19, 25-12) straight set victory before suffering their only set loss of the day in set one of match two against Newton (15-25) before bouncing back to finish off Newton in the final two sets (25-20, 15-8). McPherson then went on to take down Concordia in straight sets (25-17, 25-15) and finish the day undefeated.

“The girls had a great night of volleyball,” explained ‘B’ team Coach Stevie Stockham. “They worked hard and really played as a team. They stepped up and showed leadership when we would start the match off in the hole. I am so proud of them and I can’t believe we only have a few more matches left this season.”

Next up for the MMS eighth-grade spikers will be on Thursday when they return to Salina for a triangular with Salina Lakewood and Hays.
