McPHERSON – On the first cool day of the season, the McPherson High girls junior varsity tennis team closed out their 2019 season playing host to the AVCTL (Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League) Tournament on Tuesday and came away with a second place team finish but an individual championship in number one doubles with Sydney Achilles and Taylor Berger.

Achilles and Berger went 3-0 for the day and then took down a solid Buhler duo (9-2, 9-2, 9-4) for the league championship in number one doubles!

“Sydney (Achilles) and Taylor (Berger) proved to be our anchor of the tournament,” noted Lady Bullpup Head Coach Tyler Brown. “They won against a very good Buhler team in the finals.”

The tandem of Lakynn Lippelmann and Amethyst Hale also made the championship match in number two doubles, only to run into another solid Buhler duo who kept them at bay, giving the Lady Bullpups a 2-1 mark for the day and a second-place finish.

“Lakynn (Lippelmann) and Amethyst (Hale) also made it to the finals before dropping their final match to a tough Buhler team,” said Coach Brown.

With both the Lady Bullpups playing singles also making the semi-finals, it gave the host team the opportunity to place everybody in the top four of the tournament and Carley Malm in number one singles, and Grace Witte in number two singles did exactly that. Both finished the day 2-1 after each lost in their semi-final match of the day before bouncing back and winning a match to finish third.

“Our singles both ran into Wichita Collegiate in the semi-finals and Collegiate proved to be the better team today,” commented Coach Brown on the play of his singles players.

As a team, the Lady Bullpups placed second with 58 team points, just one point ahead of third-place Wichita Collegiate who had 57 while Buhler won the league title with 65. Other schools were Winfield (34), Circle (28), Wellington (24), El Dorado (12) and Augusta (2).

“I felt the girls played very well today,” said Coach Brown as he finished his post-tournament reflections. “It was our first cold day of the season and I thought we handled it very well with everyone making it into the semi-finals. Overall it was a solid day with terrific competition. That is one thing our league brings to the table is a high level of play from many quality teams. Several of these girls that place high today would be top players on most varsity programs!”
