HALSTEAD – With the cooler weather on Thursday came a strong day of running for the Smoky Valley Senior High and Middle School cross country teams on the road at the Halstead Invitational.
A total of 21 Viking harriers medaled in their respective divisions on the day, including all six of the runners for the Viking boy’s junior varsity.
The Lady Viking varsity squad took second in the team standings, led individually by Gracie Lambert who finished in sixth place overall. Three other Lady Vikings also medaled with Ellise Peterson, Kajsa Peterson, and Olivia Bengtson all finishing within the top-25.
While the Viking boys only had two runners that earned medals, they still finished fourth overall as a team with Ryan Heline placing fifth and Garrett Huffman landing in 23rd place.
Neveda Acheson placed 23rd for the Lady Viking junior varsity while the only other participant, Ashlyn Bryant just missed earning a medal when she finished 26th.
“We ran a very competitive meet on Thursday,” noted Viking Head Coach Holly Toll. “The girl’s team came in and scrambled for second place. I feel like they keep getting better each week! The boy’s finished fourth behind some of the top teams in the state. I was a little disappointed in our placings and don’t like to look at times a whole lot in cross country unless we are using them to pace or compare the same course to the same course. However, our times were much faster in Halstead this year than last year, so I feel that it’s a positive as we are getting close to the post-season meets. We will keep working to get stronger and faster each week.”
Smoky Valley did score one gold medal on the day as Sophia Fruits won the Middle School seventh-grade girls division. Two other Lady Junior Vikings also earned medals with Fruits as Kendra Robledo-Diaz placed 24th and Esther Clark ran 25th.
Britton Becker was the lone seventh-grade Viking to earn a medal in the boy’s division while Samuel Peterson, Brayden Eyer and Sebastion Pavlovich all scored medals for the eight-grade boys, with Peterson finished fifth.
The Junior Lady Vikings had but one runner in the eighth-grade division and Kenzie Heline made the most of it as she placed fourth.
Next Tuesday is when the Viking harriers return to a running course when they travel to Ellsworth.
