SALINA – While the McPherson Middle School eighth-grade volleyball ‘A’ team went to Salina on Thursday and managed to score one win out of two extremely close matches, while the ‘B’ team scored two victories in their pair of nail-biting close matches.

When you close out five sets of play within five points or less of your opposition, you’d expect to win several of those sets or matches. That was not the case for the eighth-grade Junior Lady Pups as they began the day dropping a straight set match with Hays (20-25, 23-25) before going a nail biting, full length three sets against host Salina Lakewood before pulling out a victory in their second match of the day (22-25, 27-25, 16-14). The split of matches leaves the ‘A’ team with a 13-8 record for the season.

“Tonight’s matches were two more nail-biters,” exclaimed eighth-grade Head Coach Jacque Colgrove. “Some rallies were the longest of the season, filled with hustle plays and saves from both teams! The girls continue to fight until the very end of each match. I am proud of their resilience for coming back to beat Salina Lakewood after losing a close one to Hays and then dropping the first set to Lakewood. I am looking forward to seeing these girls compete in every match on Saturday when we host the ‘A’ Team Pioneer League Tournament.”

While the eighth grade ‘B’ Junior Lady Pups won both their matches with Hays (25-18, 25-19) and Salina Lakewood (25-21, 25-16), both matches were even closer played then maybe the scores appeared on the scoreboard. With the two wins, the ‘B’ team is now sitting at 19-4 for the season.

“Tonight, the girls played the best they have all season,” said ‘B’ team Coach Stevie Stockham. “I pushed them by having them serve to spots and running specific plays. Several girls stepped up and were leaders on the court. I can’t believe we only have a couple of games left this season!”

The Junior Lady Pup eighth-grade spikers ‘A’ team will be back in action on Saturday when they play host to the ‘A’ team Pioneer League Tournament at The Roundhouse beginning at 9:00 a.m.
