When you get into a tangle with two undefeated teams you expect a dogfight and that is exactly what the fans received at McPherson College Stadium on Friday evening as the unbeaten McPherson High football team out dueled previously unbeaten Buhler 21-14 to get the win.
The Bullpups thought they may have a runaway game when Kaleb Hoppes connected with Aaron Powell for a 67-yard scoring pass in the first quarter to give McPherson and early 6-0 advantage after the Bullpups missed the extra point kick.
But so goes a battle of unbeatens as the Crusaders and Bullpups zeroed each other out in the second quarter and the 6-0 McPherson advantage was still the slim lead they held going into the halftime break.
Coming out of halftime where Lakynn Schieferecke and Hayes Schmid were crowned Homecoming Royalty for McPherson, the Bullpups took more control of the game for the moment by scoring twice on another scoring pass from Hoppes to Powell from 26 yards out and a 15-yard jaunt by Jakob Feil. With Cody Stufflebean pulling in a lob from Hoppes for a two-point conversion, McPherson closed out the third quarter with a commanding 21-0 advantage and had Buhler seemingly on the ropes.
Unfortunately, even with the Bullpup starting defense which had seemed to have steel gates guarding the end zone since week one, Buhler showed why they were undefeated by not giving up and putting a scare into the home crowd by scoring not just once, but twice to pull within 21-14 before the Bullpups managed to get to the final buzzer and secure the victory.
For the game, the Bullpups only had two more first downs than the Crusaders (14-12) though they did outgain them 317-222 while having the ball just four more offensive plays (63-59). McPherson out ran Buhler 108-82 on the ground while the Bullpups Kaleb Hoppes threw for 209 yards on 13 completions in 24 attempts, he only threw one interception while the Crusaders completed just 13-of-26 for 140 yards but tossed two interceptions, one by Kaleb Hoppes and another key one in the third quarter by Jayden Dukes.
One spot where Buhler held a major edge over McPherson was in flags thrown on them as they were only penalized three times for 34 yards while the Bullpups had 13 penalties called on them totaling 62 yards of errors.
Besides Hoppes playing his key role at quarterback, the Bullpups were led on offense by Aaron Powell who gathered in six of those Hoppes passes for 124 yards and the two scores, while Stufflebean covered 28 yards on a pair of receptions. On the ground, Jakob Feil rambled for 76 yards on 18 carries while Hoppes covered the ground for another 26 yards.
Defensively, Mason Thrash and Tyson Gottwald each earned four tackles to led McPherson according to the stats on hudl.com, while Curtis Landrum and Brycen Labertew each had three.
Next up for the Bullpups will be a road trip next Friday to Augusta to play the Orioles who are 2-3 for the season and lost on Friday to Winfield 25-7.
